Judy and Lyric Débuts in Florida!

January 22, 2000

Judy and Lyric began their competition season at the Gold Coast Opener show, placing 7th in there first Grand Prix. This was a particularly good start as there were 20 horses in the class, and they even placed above Judy's trainer, Gunnar Ostergarrd! The season continued with steady progress, placing 6th in the Grand prix at Wellington and 5th in the Grand Prix special. Robert Dover , four time Olympian won both these classes!  The breakthrough blue ribbon win came at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby, where the two European judges scored Lyric over 60%. The final competition was at the Equestrian Club, where the pair placed fourth in the Grand Prix , placing above Tina Konyot - winner of one of the previous Olympic Selection Trials-and fourth in the Grand Prix Special. The competition season was full of Olympic prospects, many seasoned veterans and judges looking for familiar faces.  In spite of the newness of the pairing of Judy and Lyric, they were able to hold their own, placing just behind the top riders( and in front of a few!)  They are now a familiar face on the scene and will continue there quest to represent the United States in international competition.

Joel Diamond joins the Quest to 2001 World Cup! Lyric and Judy’s next international Quest will be to try to become the sole United States representative to the World Cup in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands in April of 2001.  The World Cup is held annually and has a total of 14 horse/rider combinations competing for the title. 40% of the winning score is based on a Grand Prix ride, 60% of the score is based on a musical freestyle ride.  Judy is very excited to have Joel Diamond (a friend of her husband, Brian) composing music for she and Lyric. Joel is quite an accomplished pianist, having played for Eric Clapton, written Broadway musicals and ballets. Joel visited with Judy and Lyric in Florida and has 5 pieces in the works for them. It will give them the opportunity to pick and chose as well as custom design the music to fit lyric’s movement. They will be trying out there freestyles throughout the competitions this summer so be sure to catch them!
